Le Meilleur Château en France (Excursion Part 2)

I was going to title this "The Best Place in the World" but I just got back from vacation to Ireland and Scotland, and the Highlands are giving it a run for its money :)

Sunday we arose, bright and early, ate a lovely breakfast of bread and things to put on bread (jam, butter, nutella, you name it) and assorted beverages (typical French fare). Then, to Chenonceau! We got there bright and early, and it was stunning blue-sky weather! An added bonus, not many tourists so we were free to wander. It was every bit as beautiful as I remembered from 5 years ago, and truly a delight :) Saw another couple taking gorgeous wedding pictures, took so many pictures, and just took it all in.
Path to Chenonceau, looking exactly the same as last time

The sky! The castle! Everything was magnificent!

Awesome vaulted ceiling in the chapel

My future bread oven

We arose early that morning, and caught the sunrise! I honestly can't remember the last time I've been awake for one and it was beautiful :)

Like all respectable castles, free wifi!

Donkey :)

Me! In front of my lovely castle

Tiny cottage house? Not sure but cute :)

Gardens! Sadly not yet in bloom

The chapel. How awesome would it be to have your own chapel? Answer: Super awesome

2254 injured were cared for here during the War 1914-18

Butchers block from the kitchen, worn smooth from years of chopping!

I am loving the white stone walls with the copper plans

The ceiling of a staircase!

Absolutely gorgeous hall over the water. A couple was taking their wedding photos here!

Love
Finally, we visited Amboise. It took me all the way up to the castle to realize that I'd already visited it! This was the warmest part of the whole weekend, but super windy :) At this point everyone was a bit "castled-out" so I didn't take as many pics, however how could it compare to Chenonceau?! Afterwards, a few of us got the fanciest gelato I've ever seen, and drove back to Rennes.
Chapel of Amboise, which used to be connected to the castle before most of it was destroyed.

Pretty portrait

Gelato! You could get as many flavors as you wanted, with a petal for each one. Creative!
And with that, we finished the last of three amazing excursions with my beloved CIEE friends. It's been great, fellow Americans!

Next post will be about a trip I took to Ireland and Scotland! So very many pictures. You've been warned!

Châteaux de la Loire: Première partie

The beginning of the adventures :) After this awesome weekend of castles, fellow students, and perfect weather, we have one week of school, then 2 weeks of VACATION, then 2 days of school then a 5 day weekend!! (Which I'm turning into a 6 day weekend to go to London. And then promptly finding a job because London is as expensive as Paris, but in pounds. Which is a 1.5:1 ratio to the dollar, worse than the euro!)

The Friday before the weekend, I spent the night at a friend's house with another student to watch Pitch Perfect so we could get to the rendez-vous the next morning bright and early! After driving for around 3 hours, during which the bus driver got lost and actually stopped and ASKED FOR DIRECTIONS (it was fine by us, more time for sleep :P) we made it to Brissac! This castle was on the small side, but the amazing part was that a family actually lived there! I walked around the whole time imagining what it would be like to run around, playing in a castle, and knowing that thousands of people were touring the 1st and 2nd floors of your house each year.
Crest

Beautifully painted, three-tier windows

Dining Room- with over 80 antlers mounted on the walls. Antlers. Everywhere. They were all slain by a past Lady of the castle, who killed over 2000 deer in her lifetime!

There was a flower competition going on for florist students, and the entries were stunning!

One of the bedrooms. All had incredibly busy-looking tapestries floor-to-ceiling, and were dark. There was also a cabinet with a false back that the tour guide showed us, to hide letters, jewelry, and poison. Just the necessities of castle life!

This piece of artwork literally had a mini pond at the bottom, complete with goldfish!

The first of many pictures of kitchens. I am now deeply in love with copper pots :)

Outside of Brissac

Idea borrowed from Kate :) There was also wine-tasting in the basement, which was a one of the highlights of the castle with these cool windows.
Then, after an interesting lunch in which we mistook the main course for the entrée, and some awesome conversation with one of the students who took a year off before college and WWOOF-ed (worked on organic farms across Europe), we went to Villandry!
We walked into the room with this photo and immediately 4 people agreed and said I looked like this painting. Not sure how I feel because it's a painting OF A CHILD, but I'm going to take it as "Hey look I'm in a castle!"

Lovely peach dining room

Gorgeous kitchen (see a trend?)

So pretty

The white tent is for a couple who were taking wedding pictures here! It was amazing, and the ladies wore hats and decorations similar to those of the royal wedding!

Singer sewing machine!

I did not understand this chair. How does one awkwardly recline/sit and not slide off?

Millefeuille :) It means "thousand sheets" which is due to the pastry with many many paper-thin layers. We briefly adventured into the town of Villandry in search of pastries.  I split it with Molly, but the woman didn't give us any utensils. So I ate it wit my hands. Like an American.

Gardens of Villandry, beautiful now but they must be stunning in summer! It was pretty empty that day so it was nice to explore without huge crowds.
We wandered the woods above the castle a bit. You can see the huge carefully-cultivated gardens that Villandry is famous for in the background to the right.

After Villandry we got back in the bus for a short drive to Tours, where we spent the night. That was an adventure in and of itself- the rooms were a strange combo of double bed with a twin bunk-bed, and everything was white. So much white. I have stayed in more hospitable hostels :P

Stay tuned for Sunday: Chenonceau (aka the best castle in the world) and Amboise (where it was warm and we got gelato)

19 April, 2013

It's been a while...

So many things have happened! Right now I have finished the Rennes 2 classes, and have 11 (counting today) more days of classes with CIREFE. WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN. All of a sudden, the weather is warm and perfect, I'm about to have 3 weeks of vacation, and then I have to go home! And...take Pharmacology at the same time. Such is life for those who need to graduate on time. I can do it! Phil 4:6 and 4:16

I have been so so blessed by the Christian organizations here- GBU (which is InterVarsity in the US), and now Agape (which is Campus Crusade/Cru)! I have been going to GBU with two other girls from my program, and recently was volunteered to lead a bible study. As my friend said, if it fills you with terror YOU SHOULD DO IT. And so I did :) With help from my awesome friends from IV and here in France. It boiled down to the fact that if I want to travel and work with missions organizations in the future, I need to step out of my comfort zone at some point :P

I found out about Agape through another friend here, and went on a weekend retreat with them without knowing anyone other than the Americans! It was such a good time of fellowship and new friends, in the home of a midwife surrounded by farms. She is basically living my dream life. I did get to speak with her, in English too! The countryside was gorgeous, and just barely outside the city! I adored every moment <3 Last night someone mentioned that we'd had 12 different nationalities at the weekend. IT WAS AWESOME! I am always fascinated to hear everyone's different stories, and how they all ended up in a small city in Bretagne from all around the world.

These aren't my pictures, but I am eternally grateful for those who took them!
New friends
The house had one giant room on the first floor- which was a pleasure in and of itself because you could stretch out and dance! Something I miss being in a tiny apartment. Each meal we set up the table, which was a dining room table and two saw horses with boards on top. Everyone was at the same table :)
Our lovely all-afternoon walk!

We played Dutch Blitz. But not any Dutch Blitz, full body version! It deteriorated into running and screaming numbers in French to place the giant cards in the middle!

I want to stay here forever :)
The body of Christ is SO COOL to experience with so many different cultures together!
More to come soon- our last excursion was to see CASTLES! SO MANY CASTLES!
